El Barco is situated between the provinces of Avila, Salamanca and Caceres, with an altitude of 1.027 metres above sea level, in a precious valley surrounded by mountains.

The Starlight Foundation, a viewpoint that assures a dark ceiling for the best observation of the stars, was granted certified starlight status in 2013 by the Sierra Norte de Gredos. The Starlight project, endorsed by UNESCO and the World Tourism Organisation, was created in 2007 as a system of certification for places that create the best conditions for the contemplation of the firmament.
El Barco de Avila has always served as one of the doors of natural access to the Central Macizo of the spectacular Gredos mountain ranges, the main massif of the Central System. Thanks to its location, in between the vast array of impressive mountains nearby, El Barco boasts many privileged views. Visitors can take in the natural beauty from all angles.

Routes through the Gredos
Modelled by the glacial erosion in past epochs, the Gredos mountain ranges in the south of Castilla and Leon present themselves as a spectacular succession of lakes, cirques, gorges, ridges, and cliffs. These mountains are the home of the Hispanic goat, and on multiple occasions you will be able to see the goats from just a few metres away.

Cultural Heritage of Barco
Valdecorneja castle, The Wall, the Church of assumption…the castle was created in the 7th century around the remains of an ancient settlement. In the 14th and 15th centuries it was rebuilt, equipped with its original parts, with a round tower in each corner, plus the beautiful Torre del Homenaje.
